Alright, so I tried to make a pair of socks on a knitting machine, and let me tell you, it was quite the adventure. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at knitting, and I figured, why not start with something small like socks, right? I borrowed a friend’s old knitting machine and got some soft yarn.
Getting Started
First, I needed to set up the machine. It was a bit dusty, so I wiped it down and made sure everything was in place. Then, I read the manual, which was kind of confusing, to be honest. After a couple of read-throughs, I felt like I had a basic understanding of how this thing worked.
Casting On
Next, I had to cast on, which is basically putting the yarn on the needles. I carefully followed the instructions and looped the yarn around each needle. It took me a few tries to get the tension right. I kept going until all the needles were ready.
Knitting the Leg
Once the cast-on was done, I started knitting the leg of the sock. I turned the crank slowly, and the needles began to move. It was actually kind of mesmerizing watching the yarn turn into fabric. I just kept turning and turning, making the leg longer and longer. It was like magic, seeing the sock form right before my eyes.
Turning the Heel
Now, the heel was the tricky part. I had to do something called short rows, which is where you knit back and forth on just a few needles. I followed the steps in the manual, and I think I messed it up a couple of times. I had to rip out some rows and start over. But eventually, I got it right. The heel started to take shape, and I felt a little sense of accomplishment.
Knitting the Foot
After the heel, it was back to knitting in the round. I just kept turning the crank, just like I did for the leg. This part was pretty straightforward. I measured the foot part against my own foot to make sure it was long enough. I wanted to make sure these socks would fit comfortably.
Shaping the Toe
Then came the toe, which was similar to the heel but a bit easier. I had to decrease stitches gradually to make the toe rounded. I carefully followed the pattern, and it went pretty smoothly. I was getting the hang of this knitting machine thing!
Casting Off
Finally, it was time to cast off, which means taking the stitches off the needles. I used a latch tool to transfer the loops and tied off the end. And there it was, one finished sock! It looked a bit wonky in places, but hey, it was my first try.
Making the Second Sock
Of course, I couldn’t just have one sock, so I started on the second one. The second sock went a lot faster since I already knew what I was doing. I followed all the same steps, and before I knew it, I had a pair of socks.
Finishing Touches
I weaved in the loose ends and blocked the socks, which basically means I wet them and shaped them to look nice. And there you have it, my first pair of machine-knitted socks!
It was a fun project, and I learned a lot. The socks aren’t perfect, but they’re mine, and I’m pretty proud of them. I might even try making another pair, maybe with some different colors next time. If you’re thinking about trying a knitting machine, I say go for it! It’s a cool way to make something with your hands, even if it takes a bit of practice.

- Cast on the yarn
- Knit the leg
- Turn the heel
- Knit the foot
- Shape the toe
- Cast off the stitches
- Weave in ends and block the socks
That’s all folks. Hope you enjoyed my little adventure. Keep it real!
