This here machine knit, it ain’t like your grandma’s knitting needles, no sir. It’s a whole other thing. You see them ladies, sitting there, click-clack, click-clack, making scarves and such. Well, this machine, it does it all, but way faster. Much, much faster. Like a chicken laying eggs on a hot day, just popping them out, one after another, real quick!
Now, I ain’t saying hand knitting is bad. No, no. It’s good, makes nice things. You can take it anywhere, like when you visit your neighbor, or when your daughter has her baby. Easy to take along, you know? But this machine knit, hoo boy, it’s for when you gotta make a whole bunch of things. Like, say, you wanna make sweaters for all your grandkids, and you got a whole passel of ’em. That’s when you need a machine.
- That machine, it makes things all the same. Every stitch, just like the last one.
- Not like when you do it by hand, sometimes you pull it tight, sometimes loose.
- That ain’t a problem with the machine.
And the yarn, oh, that yarn. For machine knit, you need that special kind. Can’t use just any old yarn, no sir. It’s gotta be the slippery kind, not the fluffy stuff. Machine likes that slippery yarn. That yarn just go straight through the machine, like a greased piglet at the county fair!
My neighbor, she got one of them machines. Big thing, takes up half her room, but it can make a blanket in no time. She makes stuff for her family, and they use it all the time. That’s machine knit for you. Fast, and everything comes out just right.
If you are knitting by hand, you can make anything, any kind of stitch. That’s what them ladies always say. But, you gotta learn it first. It’s good for when you make just one thing, like a special scarf. I had a neighbor, she used to knit by hand. Made beautiful things, but took her forever. She knitted a sweater for her husband, took her most of a year!
That machine knit, it is good for business. You can make many things and sell them. If you make enough things, you can make some money. People like that stuff, especially in winter. People need warm things, and that machine can make a lot of warm things. Like them mittens, or them hats, real quick! That’s what you need.
Now, them machines, they ain’t cheap. Cost a pretty penny, they do. But if you’re gonna make a lot of things, it’s worth it. Like buying a good cow, costs a lot at first, but then you get all that milk, you know? This is all about machine knit, you see?
- Hand knitting, you can do it anywhere.
- Machine knitting, you need a big space.
- Hand knitting is slow.
- Machine knit is fast, real fast.
But that hand knitting, it’s kinda nice. You can sit and talk while you do it. Can’t really do that with the machine, it’s too noisy. It makes a racket, like a bunch of chickens squawking at the same time. But that’s the thing. That’s the thing that makes all those stuff, and makes them fast. It’s all about the speed.
You can also hold your work when you knit by hand. See how it fits, how many stitches you need. That’s good when you are making clothes, like a sweater for a baby. You need to get the size right, you know? Hard to do that with a machine, I reckon. But that machine knit, you can make a lot of things, and they are all the same size. That’s good for selling. If you make sweaters, all medium size, you can sell a lot of them.
My friend, she has a machine, she makes socks. Lots and lots of socks. All the same. You can buy them from her, real cheap. Good socks, too. Keep your feet warm. That’s the thing about machine knit, it’s practical. Makes good stuff, and a lot of it.
So, you see, that’s the difference. Hand knitting and machine knit, two different things. Both good, but different. One is slow and makes pretty things, the other is fast and makes a lot of things. You just gotta decide what you need, you know? Like choosing between a mule and a tractor. Both can plow a field, but one is a whole lot faster. And that’s the whole story of it, plain and simple.
